What people are saying about Damson’s Friendship Wish

“If you are looking for a book to share with your child and promote self-acceptance, resilience and friendship, look no further than Damson’s Friendship Wish by Dr Deborah Lawson. Debut author Dr Deborah Lawson, an award-winning disability inclusion and accessibility consultant, has carefully crafted a beautiful picture book promoting kindness, diversity, and the value of friendship. With forest animals as captivating and relatable characters, we are reminded of the importance of being true to ourselves and that everyone has value. The colourful illustrations are delightfully engaging, making the book attractive for young audiences to explore these themes.

Suitable for children aged 5-8, parents and caregivers can use this brilliant tool to teach their little ones the values of acceptance and equality and help build child self-confidence. Damson’s Friendship Wish delivers a positive message about the importance of inclusion in a simple and engaging way and is a lovely addition to anyone’s book collection.”

Karen Bones – Library Branch Manager, Mona Vale Library, NSW

“I read the story “Damson’s Friendship Wish” with my class (KS1, Year 2), and they fell in love with Damson. He’s very relatable, enthusiastic and sweet, and doesn’t always get things right when making friends. What also makes this book a bit of a treasure is that the animals aren’t unkind, they are just busy being themselves, and Damson misreads things, which opened the door to discussions about empathy, social understanding, and kindness. There was a good range of vocabulary in the story (which I’m always a fan of, to keep little minds curious), and the story took the children on a lovely, emotive journey. Stories like this are such an asset to my classroom, and I highly recommend this one. Beautiful story with a valuable lesson”

Jess Blakeman – KS1 Teacher

“This is such a beautifully written and illustrated story about a little deer who wants to fit in, tries to change himself to be liked, and learns that being different isn’t something to fix, it’s something to embrace. What made this story special is how gently it handles big feelings, like not fitting in, feeling different, learning to accept yourself, and finding genuine friends. For us, it led to a lovely conversation with our daughter about how chosen family doesn’t have to look like you (Damson’s new ‘family’ is different to him), as we’re a mixed-race family.
The story deals with topics like inclusion and self-worth with so much care and warmth that honestly, I think that everyone would benefit from its beautiful message, regardless of their age.”

Tiana – Parent (Goodreads)

“Damson’s Friendship Wish is an enchanting and uplifting story sharing what we all wish we’d known when we were younger: that the path to connection is to be simultaneously true to yourself and kind to others. Damson’s escapades, as he bumbles along trying to copy forest creatures with the hopes of making friends, illustrates this wisdom in a sweet, humorous, and relatable way. Furthermore, the book is a visual feast. The illustrations are hand-drawn, and the cute woodland animals, all in motion, are set against the comforts of the forest, dappled with light. This combination of painterly landscape and adorable characters creates magic where every page comes to life. You half expect the characters to scamper into your lap!

For anyone wanting their youngest loved ones to appreciate themselves for who they are, as they are, and to know the rewards of being kind to others now (not years down the line!), this book is a wonderful gift. Every teacher of the youngest years who values diversity needs this book, and its accompanying lessons and activities, in their classroom. I’m hoping that Deborah Lawson turns this book into a series so we can get to know more about each character and how to live life well. And in my deepest of dreams, I’m also hoping David Attenborough will narrate this book in a read-aloud!”

Kathy Pfeiffer – Teacher and Learning Specialist, San Francisco

“This is my son’s favourite book. It’s about a deer (Damson) who is clumsy, awkward and looks different. He doesn’t think he fits in, so he goes to find friends where he belongs. Even though he believes he needs to be the same as everyone else, the ending sees him being accepted by others who couldn’t be more opposite than him, who only see his kindness. Every so often, a book is more than just another story. It helps you become a better person. This is one of those. Whether your child feels or behaves differently, doesn’t fit in, or you just want to bring up your kids to be kind and accepting, this book is worth having.”

What people are saying about Damson’s Friendship Wish

Damson’s Friendship Wish is, without doubt, a must-read. What stands out most is its accessibility: it’s engaging, easy to navigate, and meaningful for readers of all ages. That is such a rare and commendable quality. Your kindness and willingness to support others is exemplified in this book. The kids are the future leaders of tomorrow and building their confidence is critical. This is definitely an amazing addition and the impact will be immense!”

Professor Christian Harrison – University of Greater Manchester

“As a mum, I’m always on the lookout for books that are kind, but still have meaning. This one completely delivered. My 6-year-old daughter loved it. We talked afterwards about how people are all different and that’s okay. She even opened up about something that had happened at school, which I don’t think she would’ve mentioned otherwise. The illustrations are gorgeous, and there’s a warmth to the way it’s written that makes it feel really reassuring. The ending says what every parent would want their child to hear, and I’m grateful to have found a book that teaches kids such a positive message. Honestly, this story is just lovely in every way. Would absolutely recommend.”

Sarah Hove – Parent (Waterstones)

“This book is beautiful. My heart goes out to Damson, blundering through life (I think we can all relate!), and the ending is just joyous. My daughter and I love everything about this book. It’s sweet, funny, gentle and touching. The hand-drawn illustrations are gorgeous, and the story is beautifully written. An absolute gem, we’re so glad we discovered it.”

Gem Radison – Parent (Waterstones)

“While Damson’s Friendship Wish is a children’s book, its message really struck a chord with me on a much deeper level. Damson’s journey reminded me of my own experience growing up feeling like I needed to fit into certain boxes or meet expectations that never quite felt right. For years I searched externally for acceptance and happiness, not realising that the key was embracing my own uniqueness all along and looking inwards.

There is often an unspoken pressure to prove your worth through outward experiences like being in a relationship, having a “successful” job or constantly showing strength and inspiration. For someone with a disability, those pressures can feel even greater. I often felt like I was being measured against different standards or that I had to work twice as hard to be seen as equal. There was an added challenge in trying to fit in while also navigating expectations that I should always be positive and “inspirational.” This left little room for sharing the real struggles and complexities of life.

In today’s fast-paced world, especially with social media pushing a perfect image of what you should be like, it is more important than ever for children to learn early that they are enough just as they are. This story offers a gentle and powerful way to start that conversation, encouraging kindness, self-acceptance and celebrating differences.  Without sharing too much of the story itself, I can say this book is a beautiful reminder that being yourself is one of the bravest and most important things you can do. I hope many children find confidence and comfort in its message, helping them build resilience and positive mental health from the start. If you care about mental wellbeing, inclusion or helping young people grow into their best selves, this is a story worth knowing about.”

Isaac Harvey MBE – Disability Advocate, London

“Not many books leave me feeling like I’ve given my kids a reassuring hug just from the words on the page but this one did and has to be the sweetest, most lovely and impactful book I’ve ever read to them. It teaches kids not to be afraid to be themselves. I love how the cute characters are different animals so every child can see bits of themselves in them and teaches them we don’t have to be the same as our friends. And Damson is just gorgeous (my little boy even hugged a page Damson was on). The book encourages kids to be kind and we definitely need more of that in the world. My kids adore this book, and so do I.”

Janie – Parent (Goodreads)

“What a lovely story to share with your child. Its theme is kindness, but Damson the deer and his friends are by no means perfect. They have to go on a journey together to learn what inclusion looks and feels like. Along the way, there are amusing blunders, and opportunities for children of all ages to shout things like ‘GRUNT’ and ‘CRACK’! In a refreshing departure from traditional fairy tales, the happy ending comes not from an enchanted transformation but from the even more magical growth of friendship based on just being who you are.”

Cllr Kay Wesley – Congleton Town Mayor (2024-25), Cheshire

“I read Damson’s Friendship Wish with my 5-year-old and 8-year-old, and both loved it from the first page. My youngest enjoyed the humour and beautiful illustrations, while my eldest picked up on the deeper message about being yourself and valuing kindness. It’s beautifully written, with just the right mix of warmth and light-hearted moments, and it held both their attention right to the end. We’ve already read it twice this week, and I can see it becoming a favourite. It’s a wonderful reminder for children that being yourself is enough, and that real friendship comes from accepting each other.”

Amelie Thompson – Parent (Waterstones)

“Just read this with my daughter and I’ve got to say, it’s a lovely book. Damson is a sweet character and the story really gets across how important it is to be kind and be yourself. The pictures are full of cute animals, which kept her interested throughout. It’s the sort of story that makes you smile and gives you something to chat about afterwards – like how to be a good friend, and how it’s important to be yourself. The ending hit me quite deeply, even as a dad, remembering how I struggled to fit in as a kid (wish someone had told me this message back then tbh). Think this should be on every kid’s bookshelf to reassure them that they are enough. Well worth a read.”

Mark – Parent (Goodreads)

“I loved reading Damson’s Friendship Wish with my kids. My 4-year-old giggled all the way through, while my 8-year-old was completely absorbed… which doesn’t happen often! They both connected with Damson in their own way. The funny bits, beautiful illustrations, and touching story made it so nice to read with them. It’s a story that reminds everyone that they matter. And it’s a huge hit in our house.”

Ama – Parent (Goodreads)

“My daughter and I really enjoyed this beautiful book. It’s about a sweet deer who wants to fit in, so he copies others. It’s sweet, funny, and my daughter loved it. She had a lot of questions afterwards, which got her really curious about differences and being kind to others. I love how in the end, the little deer (Damson) is just himself… and that’s enough. It’s the sort of book I think we all wish we’d had growing up. The lovely illustrations and gentle humour kept my daughter smiling throughout. It’s a touching, timeless, and lovely read that reminds not just kids, but adults too, about the power of kindness, friendship, and that it’s okay to be ourselves. This will definitely be a bedtime favourite.”

Susan Bradbury – Parent (Waterstones)

“Damson’s Friendship Wish is a beautifully written children’s book that speaks directly to the hearts of young readers aged 5-8. Written by Deborah Lawson, a multi-award-winning disability inclusion and accessibility consultant, this charming story is both a delightful adventure and a meaningful lesson in self-acceptance, empathy and the beauty of diversity.

At the centre of the story is Damson, a clumsy but lovable young deer who struggles with impulsivity and social cues. He also has a wonky antler, making him physically different, too. As his birthday approaches, Damson makes a heartfelt wish for friends to celebrate with. What follows is a gentle and imaginative journey through the forest as Damson tries to fit in by mimicking the other animals he comes across in hopes of finding friendship. What makes this story especially powerful is its central message: we don’t have to change who we are to be accepted. Damson learns, as do the young readers, that true friendship and love come when we’re free to be ourselves, and that’s when kindness, helpfulness and compassion can truly shine.

Deborah’s personal insights as a disability advocate and change-maker shine through every page, creating a book that is both inclusive and empowering. Damson’s Friendship Wish is not only a joy to read aloud, but also a wonderful tool for parents, caregivers, and early-year educators. It gently opens the door to important conversations about difference, inclusion and celebrating what makes each of us unique. This book is a must-have for every child’s bookshelf. Young readers will see parts of themselves, or those they know, in Damson’s journey, and through it, will be reminded that everyone is worthy of love and friendship, just as they are.”

Cheryl Cribbin – Qualified Early Years Practitioner, Cheshire

“I read Damson’s Friendship Wish with my 7-year-old granddaughter, and we both absolutely loved it. It’s a lovely story, with emotional intelligence you don’t find in many books these days. The little deer Damson is clumsy, awkward and a bit unsure of himself, but full of heart. There’s no big villain, just the deer trying his best and getting it wrong. I think the message is a really important one. It tells children they don’t need to copy others to be liked, and that kindness and being yourself matter most. As someone now in my late 60s this bit of wisdom is essential for all kids to learn. I’ve read many books to my grandchildren over the years, but this one, from the beautiful artwork to the emotive writing, felt extra special.”

Julia – Grandparent (Goodreads)

“Damson’s Friendship Wish is a beautiful story about a deer who wants friends on his birthday but doesn’t quite fit in. I found it so valuable for teaching my son that he doesn’t need to copy others… he should embrace who he is. Every time we’ve read it, he’s taken something new from it. It’s a kind, inclusive, and uplifting story that reassured my son (and me!) that being yourself is more than enough. We absolutely love this book… I recommend it to every parent I know.”

Lisa – Parent (Goodreads)

“I bought this book for my great-grandson’s 6th birthday, and from start to finish, it made us smile. The story and pictures have a warmth that’s hard to find nowadays. I loved it so much, I bought a copy for myself. At 92, that might seem unusual, but when I need a boost, I sit with a cup of tea and read it, and it never fails to make me smile. Even at my age, this story reminds me that I matter and that the kindness I try to give others makes a difference. I’ve read many books in 92 years, but this one is truly special.”

Doreen Lewis – Grandparent (Waterstones)

“My children loved this story. The illustrations are gorgeous, and Damson is so sweet. It’s beautifully written and encourages children to be kind and understand that differences are something to embrace (both in themselves and others). It’s gentle, funny, and makes children feel more confident. Whether your child is shy, super energetic, sensitive, or just figuring out where they fit in, it’s a lovely book about accepting yourself and others.”

Paula Whittikar – Parent (Waterstones)

“As a childminder, I look after a lot of different kids from different backgrounds, and this book went down brilliantly with all of them. It’s sweet and easy to follow, and the kids loved Damson. The little deer (Damson) just wants to make friends and tries his best, but it goes wrong, before he realises he was enough all along. We’ve had some brilliant chats after reading it like why the animals ran away, what Damson could have done differently, and how we can be kind to people who feel left out. It’s such a relief to find a book that doesn’t rely on bullying to talk about difference. It’s a story about kindness, inclusion, courage, friendship, and learning that it’s okay to be yourself. Every time we finish reading it, the kids want to talk about times when they felt lonely, and seem to be kinder to each other, which I think says it all. Overall, it’s beautifully written and illustrated and all kids would benefit from its meaningful message. I’ll be using it a lot in my work and highly recommend it.”

Flo – Childminder (Barnes & Noble)

“Such a beautiful book. I have got my son lots of inclusive books but this is our favourite. It shows kids that not only are they enough, but teaches other kids to appreciate others too, even if they make mistakes. It’s a lovely book about friendship and self-acceptance and one I hope my son will pass down to his own kids one day.”

Victoria Mitchell – Parent (Waterstones)

“Damson’s Friendship Wish is one of the most lovely children’s books I’ve shared with my 8 and 6-year-old. It’s a fun story, with an important message and a great tool to build children’s self-confidence. Damson finds it hard to know how to make friends but finally realises that being himself is what matters. The illustrations are gorgeous, lots to look at and full of sweet animals. My kids thought Damson digging up the acorns was hilarious! We also downloaded the colouring and activity sheets from the website, which they really enjoyed, and they’re now proudly stuck on our fridge. At 3-5 I think kids would love the fun parts of the story and the illustrations, for 6-8 they’d start to reflect on the deeper meanings behind it. So I think it’s suitable for a wide age range because the story will reveal more to kids as their emotional development grows. Overall, it’s a beautiful story about kindness, friendship, acceptance and inclusion, which I think everyone will take something different and meaningful from. It’s written with compassion and feels like the author genuinely cares about building up children’s self-esteem. My kids loved every single page… and honestly, so did I”

Lizzie – Parent (Amazon)

“What a wonderful read for children, with a stunning message! It’s so beautifully written and fabulously illustrated! It will be a joy for all it’s readers. Thank you so much to the amazing author for this beautiful piece of work”

Lesley Wright – Grandparent (Amazon)

“I was looking for a new book to read to my kids, and my son’s teacher recommended this. The beautiful artwork reminded me of some of my favourite books I read growing up. It’s a wonderful story about a cute little deer called Damson who’s got wonky antlers and just wants to make some friends. He tries copying other animals and gets himself into all sorts of trouble because he ultimately just wants to fit in. Something we have all felt at some point in our lives. Damson soon discovers he is enough just by being himself which is something I wish I had learnt at a much younger age. The story is beautifully written with a lot of scope for conversations about feeling different, being kind, and being yourself, and also encourages kids to be friends with others that don’t look like them (Damson’s friends end up being a rabbit, squirrel etc). It’s already my kids favourite book. This book’s message gives kids the reassurance I think every adult wants to give them, but in a really relatable way. My 4 and 6-year-old are already arguing over whose bedroom shelf it will live on.”

Charlie – Parent (Amazon)

“I bought this to read to my daughter, and we both loved it immediately. The illustrations are hand-drawn and gorgeous. And the story is written so beautifully. Parts have gentle humour, and other parts are warm and wise. It’s about Damson, a little deer who struggles to make friends. In the end, he learns that being himself and being kind are what matter. The book teaches kids that we are all different, but that we are all equally awesome, and don’t dim your light, just be proud to be you. The story explores difference and inclusion in a natural and subtle way, perfect for kids. Damson’s a bit clumsy, sweet, and has a wonky antler, the rabbits is anxious, the squirrels stressed and busy, the birds are easily scared, and the owl is thoughtful and wise. It’s one of the most heart-warming books I’ve read to my daughter, and is relatable, sweet, but has a lovely message at the end. This is already a favourite in our house.”

Parent’s review (Barnes & Noble)

“A fantastic story with a positive message and beautiful illustrations. I bought this to read to my Grandsons, they absolutely loved it. I think it will become a long term favourite.”

Joy – Grandparent (Amazon)

“Came across this beautiful book by chance and ordered immediately – the illustrations are immersive and adorable but the tale of (the slightly ‘different’) Damson’s journey to friend friendship is just joyous. Accessible and thought provoking, a perfect opener for conversation about inclusion – I’ll be using this a lot within my work!”

Amazon review

Damson’s Friendship Wish is a heartwarming story about a young deer learning the importance of self-acceptance and kindness. I love how the author’s message is that we don’t have to change who we are to be loved, and our differences make us unique and beautiful. There are also some great free downloadable activities with the book, including coloring pages, worksheets on counting and missing letters, a word search, and even ideas for discussions afterwards. Damson’s Friendship Wish promotes meaningful conversations about empathy, acceptance, and being oneself. The book is a #1 bestseller and I highly recommend it for all children and adults who need a reminder that they are enough as they are. I LOVE the book”

Cindy Smith – Grandparent (Barnes & Noble)

“We’ve read a lot of books at bedtime, but this one really stood out. It ended up being one of the nicest storytimes we’ve had in ages. I got it as my son often feels left out (he has Autism, ADHD and Dyspraxia). The author handles loneliness, awkwardness, and resilience with such warmth. The deer is very sweet and impulsive, clumsy, has a lack of social skills, and mimics others, so very apt for neurodivergent kids. However, the story would work for lots of different kids I think, like kids with physical disabilities (he has a wonky antler), hidden disabilities, anxiety/shyness, kids from different backgrounds, cultures, faiths, LGBTQ+, or kids just not part of the ‘popular’ crowd. There’s no bullying or other triggering topics in the book. It’s just a sweet story about trying to fit in. The very next day, our son (6) went to school and made a new friend. This was a major milestone for him and I honestly think this book gave him the courage.

Damson’s Friendship Wish is lovely in every way and will be one of our bedtime favourites. It’s beautifully written, the deer’s struggles are handled with genuine compassion, and its message about difference, self-acceptance and kindness makes it a real gem. I’d love to see the book adapted for TV one day, as I think every child would benefit from its message. It covers big topics but age-appropriately, and for kids who don’t fit in (like mine), it’s like a hug in a book, reassuring them that they are enough.”

Charlotte Williams – Parent (Amazon)

“I got to read this book with my nephews. It’s got to be one of the most touching, sweet stories I’ve read about being yourself, even if you feel awkward, and making friends. I’m not normally a softie, but this book gave me all the feels. It’s lovely :)”

Jen (Goodreads)

“My son Alex (27) has autism and is quite eclectic when choosing his reading material. But I have to say, as his mum, we have spent many an hour reading this beautifully and thoughtfully put together package. The book is thought provoking as Damson goes on this journey of self discovery and acceptance. The activities within this pack were most enjoyable and creative. My son keeps going back to this book time and time again (usually only reserved for Disney books!). I have gifted a pack to his day centre where it is well used.”

Julie (Amazon)

“This is empathetic and beautiful. I bought this beautiful and heart-warming children’s book for my granddaughter. Even though she’s a little young to grasp the full meaning of this emotionally powerful book, she enjoyed following along and was captivated by the magnificent illustrations. It is a real GEM!!!”
